The typical letter is the middle one: half of all letters are shorter, half are longer. We use it rather than the average because a handful of very long letters would drag an average up and make it describe nobody.
Airmail makes a letter take a day to arrive, on purpose. Knowing a reply cannot come for a day changes what people write — why we built it.

- A letter counts once it has been delivered. Airmail still in the air, and classroom letters waiting for a teacher's approval, are left out until they land.
- Classroom letters are not counted at all. Pupils write inside a closed space run by their teachers, and it stays closed here too.
- Demo accounts are left out of everything. Member counts also leave out accounts that are hidden, disabled or still missing a profile photo, so they describe people you could actually write to.
- Members are counted by the country on their profile. Somebody who moves is counted where they live now.
- Nothing on this page is about a person. Small numbers are held back rather than shown, because a route or a language used by only one or two people could point at them.
- The numbers are worked out a few times a day, so they can be a few hours behind.
