Practise Spanish with a pen pal
The practical method most members here settle on: write your letter with roughly two-thirds in your own language and one-third in Spanish at first, and shift the ratio as you improve. Ask explicitly for corrections, because most people will not correct an unprompted letter — it feels rude. Then correct their writing in return, in the same letter, with the same level of care you asked for.
The single most useful correction format is the rewrite-with-reasons: your partner quotes your sentence, gives the natural version, and adds a few words on why. "Fui a la tienda ayer" rather than "he ido a la tienda ayer" — because a completed action with a past time marker takes the preterite. Three of those per letter will teach you more than a month of apps.
A word on which Spanish. Spain and Latin America differ in vocabulary, in the second person plural, and in the whole feel of the register — and Argentina differs from Mexico as much as either differs from Spain. Neither is more correct. Decide which one you actually need, say so in your profile, and find a partner from that region rather than averaging across all of them.
What to write about, once the mechanics are settled: your week, in detail. Language exchange partnerships die when they become homework and survive when they become friendship, and the fastest route to the second is boring specifics — what you cooked, what annoyed you on the way to work, what your town looks like in the rain.
