Practise French with a pen pal
The method: write part of each letter in French, ask for it back marked up, and correct your partner's writing with the same care. What you want is not a corrected copy but a commented one — the original sentence, the natural version, and a line explaining the rule. Accord du participe passé makes sense far faster when you have seen your own mistake explained three times than when you have read the rule twenty.
Set the register early. French distinguishes tu and vous, and written French keeps politeness formulas that English abandoned a century ago. Ask your pen pal to correct those too — a closing formula is the single most visible marker of whether you have been taught by a person or by an app, and it takes about a week to fix.
French has more native-speaking countries than most learners think about: France, Belgium, Switzerland, Quebec, and a long list across West and Central Africa. Quebec French in particular differs enough in vocabulary and idiom that choosing deliberately is worth it. Say which variety you want in your profile.
And write about ordinary things. The exchanges that last are the ones that became a friendship somewhere around the fourth letter — which happens when you stop writing exercises and start writing about your week, your town, the film you did not like and why.
