France has the deepest correspondence culture in Europe, and it shows in the letters. The correspondance scolaire — pairing a class with one abroad — has been part of French schooling for generations, so a great many members grew up writing to a stranger and never quite lost the habit.

The everyday France that comes through in these letters is not the postcard one. It is the rhythm of lunch actually taken seriously, the administrative paperwork that defeats even the French, the difference between Paris and everywhere else, market day in a town of four thousand people, strikes as a normal feature of the calendar, and regional cooking that changes completely every two hundred kilometres.

For learners, French by letter has a specific advantage: the written language is where the grammar lives. Agreement, tenses and the subjunctive are hard to hear and easy to see, so a marked-up letter teaches you more per hour than a conversation does. French members are, in our experience, unusually willing to correct properly — and a good many want English, Spanish or German in return.

One cultural note that saves confusion: politeness formulas matter more in written French than most learners expect. Getting vous and tu right, and signing off with something better than a bare "au revoir", registers as effort. Ask your pen pal to correct those too; it is the fastest thing to fix and the most noticeable.

First letters that work: ask what their region eats that the rest of the country does not, what they actually do on a Sunday, what they think of how France is imagined abroad, or which French film or book they would give a foreigner who wants to understand the place. Avoid opening with clichés about berets and baguettes — they have heard them all.
