About United Kingdom
In December, a pen pal in the north of Scotland may be writing to you after a sunset that came in the middle of the afternoon, while a pen pal in Cornwall gets noticeably more daylight. In June the balance flips, and Scottish summer evenings stay light very late. The United Kingdom is not a large country, but it stretches far enough north for this to shape daily life, and that is a useful clue to how much variety fits inside it.
Four nations, not one
The UK is made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and the most common mistake outsiders make is treating "British" and "English" as the same thing. Someone from Cardiff, Glasgow or Belfast may be politely but firmly not English, and many people feel strongly about which nation they come from. If you are unsure, ask your pen pal how they would describe themselves. It is a good opening question and avoids an awkward first letter.
The differences are practical too. Education is run separately in each nation, so school calendars and exams differ. Scottish schools usually go back in mid-August, while schools in England and Wales return in early September. Teenagers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland usually sit GCSEs around age 16, while Scotland has its own qualifications, including Highers.
Words that need a second look
English is the everyday language almost everywhere, but it is not the only one. Welsh is widely taught and spoken in Wales, where road signs are bilingual; Scottish Gaelic is spoken in parts of the Highlands and Islands; Irish and Ulster Scots have a place in Northern Ireland. In cities you will also hear many community languages, from Polish to Punjabi.
Even in English, a few words travel badly. In much of northern England "tea" can mean the evening meal, not just the drink, and "dinner" can mean lunch. If you are learning English, a British pen pal can help with exactly these things: everyday vocabulary, regional accents written into slang, and the British habit of understatement, where "not bad" may be high praise.
The year by its evenings
- Bonfire Night, 5 November. Fireworks and bonfires, mostly in England, remembering the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605.
- Christmas and Boxing Day, 25โ26 December. The biggest family holiday for many households, with plenty of rituals worth asking about.
- Hogmanay, 31 December. Scotland's New Year celebration, with customs of its own such as "first-footing", being the first visitor through the door after midnight.
- Bank holidays. Public holidays differ slightly between the nations; Scotland marks St Andrew's Day (30 November) and Northern Ireland St Patrick's Day (17 March).
Most people get around by car, bus or train, and in London by the Underground. Weather is a national topic of conversation for a reason: it changes often and rarely reaches extremes, so expect it to come up.
Questions to start with
- Which part of the UK are you in, and how would you describe where you live to someone who has never been?
- What does your school day or work day look like, from the time you leave home to the time you eat in the evening?
- Do you speak or learn any language besides English?
- What is a tradition in your family that might surprise someone from another country?
Post between countries can be slow, so many pen pals stay digital and save postcards for special occasions. If you are using your letters to practise English, our language exchange guide has ideas for making corrections friendly.

Hi there! ๐ Welcome to my profile! I'm an easygoing, friendly person who enjoys meeting people from all walks of life. I think it's wonderful how people from different parts of the world can connect, share stories, learn from one another, and become good friends despite the distance. I'm interested in different cultures, everyday life, personal experiences, and discovering what makes each person unique. I value honesty, respect, kindness, and a good sense of humour. I'm hoping to meet pen pals who enjoy meaningful conversations, sharing their interests, talking about life, and learning about different places and traditions. Whether you're looking for a casual chat or a friendship that grows over time, you're very welcome to send me a message. Don't be shy. I'd be happy to hear from you!

I'm Rachel, I love deep conversations, kind of dislike small talk! I love reading, writing, Gilmore Girls, Supernatural, playing guitar and piano, and I live and breathe music. I am a very openminded person, almost possible to offend me, I love dark humour, but also love silly/goofy/sarcastic humour... You're free to just be yourself with me.
