Everything PenPalConnect can do
Most messaging apps are built to make conversations faster. PenPalConnect is built to make them better — every feature below exists to slow things down just enough for real friendship to happen.
✉️ The letters
Letters, not chats
Messages on PenPalConnect are written like classic pen pal letters. Until someone replies, you can send one letter per day — so nobody gets buried, and every letter gets read.
Airmail mode
Tick the airmail box and your letter travels for 24 hours before it lands — and the conversation stays sealed both ways while it's in the air, just like waiting for the postman.
Real letters only
Prefer substance? Set a minimum length for letters sent to you — 50, 150 or even 300 words — and writers see a live word count while they write to you.
Language corrections
Learning a language? Let pen pals correct your letters — corrections arrive as a word-by-word comparison, so you see exactly what a native speaker would have written.
💌 Getting to know each other
Matching that explains itself
Discover members by country, language, age and interests — with a match percentage that shows its reasons: shared purposes, languages you're each learning, interests in common.
Photo reveal through letters
Camera-shy members can keep their photo pixelated until letters have actually been exchanged — it sharpens step by step and becomes clear after 25 letters. People pick you for your words, not your looks.
Sealed questions
Open a sealed envelope with one question you both answer — the answers stay hidden until both of you have written, then reveal together. Like opening letters at the same time.
Photo albums you control
Albums are locked by default. A pen pal can request access only after you've genuinely exchanged 25 letters — and you decide, album by album, who sees what.
🌍 Community rituals
Postcard of the month
One photo prompt, one month, everyone together — from "something red on your street" to "nature you've been out in". Members stick stamp reactions on each other's postcards.
The world question
Every month the whole community answers one question — "when is dinner at your home?" — and the results are revealed by country, never by person. The differences write your next letter for you.
Stamps, streaks and badges
Collect a country stamp for every pen pal you've written a real correspondence with, keep weekly streaks alive, and earn badges from your first letter to your two-hundredth.
🛡 Safety, seriously
Adults and teens never mix
Members join from age 13, and members under 18 see and write only with other under-18s. The separation is built into every list, search and letter — not a setting anyone can switch off.
Video verification
Members can prove on video that they're a real person and earn a Verified badge — and anyone can choose to receive letters from verified members only.
Privacy by default
Every uploaded photo is stripped of location data before it's stored, view-once photos really do disappear, and blocking and reporting are one tap away everywhere.
🏫 For classrooms
Teachers can connect their class with a classroom abroad for group correspondence — the modern version of the class pen pal project, without the six-week wait.
More about classroom exchangesAnd all of it is free
No subscriptions, no ads, no premium tiers, no locked features. PenPalConnect is free for everyone, because pen friendship shouldn't have a paywall.
