The country they describe runs between Accra's noise and the quieter pace of Kumasi, Cape Coast or the north, and members are usually keen to place themselves precisely rather than speak for the whole country. Letters cover family and the respect language that goes with it, church as a weekly anchor for many, WASSCE results and what comes after them, trotro routes and their unofficial timetables, chop bars and what is actually eaten at lunch, and the everyday economics of a young country where a great many people run something of their own.
English is the official language and members write it comfortably, so this is rarely about learning English. Twi is the language you will most often be offered, and it is worth taking up: a handful of greetings used correctly will earn you a warmer letter than a paragraph of apology for not knowing any.
Jollof will come up. So will highlife, hiplife and whatever is currently crossing over, and members can be very funny about the difference between what plays abroad and what plays at a Ghanaian wedding.
