My Life in Malawi: The Everyday Moments That Make My Story Special
My name is Moses, and I come from Malawi, a beautiful country in southeastern Africa often called the Warm Heart of Africa. When people ask me what life in Malawi is like, I sometimes struggle to find the right words. Not because there is nothing to say, but because life here is made up of so many little experiences that are difficult to explain in a single conversation.
I could tell you about our beautiful landscapes, Lake Malawi, our traditions, or our friendly people. However, I would rather share something more personal: what an ordinary day looks like for me, the experiences that have shaped my life, the people who make my days meaningful, and the simple things that bring happiness to my heart.
For me, life in Malawi is not always about extraordinary events. Sometimes, the most beautiful memories come from ordinary moments.
A Morning in My Neighbourhood
My day usually begins with the sounds of life slowly waking up around me. Depending on where I am, I might hear people sweeping their yards, children preparing for school, neighbours greeting one another, or someone starting their daily business.
There is something special about these ordinary morning activities. People have different responsibilities, but everyone seems to be moving towards something.
You might see someone carrying a bucket of water, another person preparing goods for a small business, and a parent reminding children not to be late for school.
As I begin my day, I also think about the things I need to accomplish. Some mornings are full of plans, while others are quieter. Like many people, I have days when everything seems to go according to plan and other days when unexpected situations change everything.
One thing I appreciate about living here is the way ordinary people find ways to continue with their daily responsibilities despite life's uncertainties.
Food Brings People Together
One of my favourite parts of Malawian life is our food culture.
If there is one meal that immediately reminds me of home, it is nsima served with vegetables and fried fish.
Nsima is more than just food to many Malawians. It is part of our everyday culture. It is commonly prepared using maize flour and served with different relishes, which can include vegetables, beans, meat or fish.
I particularly enjoy eating nsima with fried fish and fresh vegetables.
Imagine sitting down with family after a busy day. Someone has prepared the nsima, another person has arranged the relish, and everyone is getting ready to eat.
There is usually conversation around the table. Someone might talk about something that happened during the day, another person might make a joke, and sometimes people disagree about something small.
Those moments are special to me.
Food has a way of bringing people together, even when everyone has different responsibilities and busy schedules.
Another interesting thing about Malawian meals is that people have different ways of preparing their food. Some prefer their vegetables cooked with tomatoes and onions, while others enjoy different traditional recipes.
Whenever I eat a familiar meal, I am reminded that culture is not only something we see during festivals or special celebrations. It is also something we experience every day in our homes.
Family Is Part of My Story
Family plays an important role in my life.
Like many families, we have our happy moments, serious conversations, disagreements and unforgettable memories. Nobody's family is perfect, but I believe the experiences we share with one another help shape who we become.
One thing I value is spending time with family, even when there is not much happening.
Sometimes, a simple visit from a family member can make an ordinary day feel special. You exchange greetings, talk about what has been happening, share a meal and catch up on things you might not have discussed for some time.
I also appreciate the importance of respecting older family members. In our communities, greetings and showing respect are important parts of everyday interaction.
When someone visits, it is common to welcome them warmly and make time for conversation.
Becoming a father has also given me a different perspective on life. Holding my little boy and watching him grow has reminded me that life is full of new beginnings. It has made me think more deeply about responsibility, patience and the kind of future I would like to build for my family.
These are personal moments that cannot be measured by money or material possessions.
Work, Responsibility and Unexpected Changes
Another important part of my story is my experience with work.
I have experienced working under contracts and being part of a team where people depend on one another to complete daily responsibilities.
One experience I remember is working during a citywide electricity outage. It was one of those days when the normal routine changed completely.
There were responsibilities to attend to, people waiting for updates and tasks that still needed attention despite the circumstances.
Being part of a working team taught me the importance of communication, patience and cooperation. Sometimes, work becomes challenging, especially when unexpected problems arise, but those experiences teach you how to remain calm and find ways forward.
My employment situation later changed when my contract came to an end. It was an adjustment because suddenly I had to reorganise my daily routine and think differently about my next steps.
I learned that life does not always follow the plans we make.
There are moments when you have to stop, reflect and find another direction. Although uncertainty is not always comfortable, it has taught me to appreciate opportunities and never take ordinary working days for granted.
I believe many people in Malawi understand this experience. Life can bring unexpected changes, but we continue learning, adapting and looking for new possibilities.
Conversations, Friendships and Meeting People
One thing I genuinely enjoy is meeting people from different backgrounds.
I am interested in learning about other countries, languages, traditions and ways of life. Through conversations with people from different parts of the world, I have discovered that although our lifestyles may be different, we often share similar values.
We all have families, dreams, responsibilities and personal experiences.
I enjoy conversations where people can talk openly about their cultures without judging one another.
For example, someone from another country might ask me what Malawians eat, what languages we speak or how we spend our weekends.
I enjoy answering these questions because they give me an opportunity to share a little about where I come from.
I also enjoy learning a few words from other languages. Sometimes, even learning a simple greeting can make a conversation more interesting.
I believe friendship should be built on honesty, kindness and mutual respect. Distance should not prevent people from learning about one another.
My Interests and How I Spend My Free Time
Outside my daily responsibilities, I have several interests that keep me entertained.
I enjoy sports, music, reading and learning languages.
Sports are interesting to me because they bring people together. It does not matter whether someone is watching a match at home, listening to commentary on the radio or discussing a game with friends. There is always something to talk about.
Music is another important part of my life.
My taste in music is quite varied. I enjoy rock music, electronic music and some calmer sounds depending on my mood. Sometimes I prefer something energetic, while other times I want music that allows me to relax and think.
Reading also gives me an opportunity to discover new ideas and learn things I might not encounter in my everyday surroundings.
I am particularly interested in learning about other cultures and how people live in different parts of the world.
I do not believe that someone needs to travel internationally to become interested in the world. Sometimes, a good conversation, a book or a new friendship can open your mind to places you have never visited.
The Challenges of Everyday Life
I would not describe my life in Malawi as perfect. Like anywhere else, there are challenges.
There are days when plans do not work out, responsibilities become overwhelming and opportunities take longer than expected.
I have personally experienced periods of uncertainty that required patience and strength.
One thing I have learned is that you cannot control everything that happens around you. However, you can choose how you respond to different situations.
I have also learned to appreciate small achievements. Completing an important task, having a peaceful day with family, receiving a kind message from a friend or simply enjoying a good meal can make a difference.
Sometimes, happiness is not about having everything you want. It is about recognising the value of what you already have.
These experiences have made me more understanding of other people's situations. Everyone has a story, and sometimes the person smiling beside you is dealing with challenges you know nothing about.
That is one reason I believe kindness matters.
What I Love About Being Malawian
Being from Malawi is an important part of my identity.
I appreciate our languages, traditions, food and the different ways communities celebrate important occasions.
Chichewa is widely spoken, but Malawi is also home to several other languages, including Chitumbuka, Chiyao, Chitonga and many more.
I find it interesting how language connects people to their history and communities.
Even simple greetings can carry a lot of meaning. Taking time to greet someone before starting a conversation is an important part of everyday interaction in many communities.
I also appreciate the way traditional and modern lifestyles exist side by side.
You can find people using modern technology while still maintaining cultural practices passed down through generations.
Young people are exploring new opportunities through social media, business and education, while older generations continue sharing traditional knowledge and values.
This combination makes everyday life interesting.
My Hopes for Tomorrow
When I think about the future, I think about opportunities, personal growth and creating a better life for my family.
I would like to continue learning, meeting new people and discovering opportunities that allow me to develop my abilities.
I also hope to build something meaningful through hard work and determination.
I know that progress does not always happen quickly. Sometimes it requires patience, sacrifice and the willingness to start again when things do not work out.
But I remain hopeful.
I want my son to grow up understanding the importance of respect, kindness, honesty and hard work. I want him to appreciate where he comes from while also being curious about the wider world.
Most importantly, I want him to understand that every person has a story worth telling.
A Little About My Malawi
If I had to describe my life in Malawi in a few words, I would say it is a mixture of family, culture, everyday responsibilities, friendships, challenges and hope.
My story is not about living a perfect life. It is about experiencing ordinary days, learning from difficult moments, appreciating family and finding happiness in simple things.
Sometimes it is sharing nsima and fried fish with family. Sometimes it is listening to music after a long day. Sometimes it is having an interesting conversation with someone from another country or watching a football match.
These little experiences make up my life.
I hope that when someone reads my story, they will understand that Malawi is not just a name on a map or a destination people visit. It is home to real people with real experiences, families, dreams and everyday stories.
And this is one of those stories.
I am Moses, and this is a little part of my life in Malawi, the Warm Heart of Africa.
