Find pen pals in Uganda
Most write from Kampala or the towns around it, and the city they describe is loud, young and improvised: boda-bodas threading traffic, markets that run on relationships, and a population where the median age is under twenty. Away from it, letters turn to farming, to family land, to the practicalities of water and power, and to school — UCE and UACE results shape the years after sixteen much as exams do elsewhere in the region. English is official and the language of schooling, so exchanges start in English without effort. Luganda is the language most often offered in return, and members are generous teachers of it — greetings first, then the grammar that makes European learners blink.
Lake Victoria features less romantically than outsiders expect. Members write about fishing as work, about weather that arrives faster than the forecast, and about the roads between here and there.
Good openings: ask what their district is known for, what a normal breakfast is, what they would change about Kampala, or what their school day was like. Ask what people do on a Sunday when nothing in particular is happening.
