That is the real subject. A member in Kerala and a member in Punjab share a passport and not much else day to day: different languages, different scripts, different food, different festivals on different dates. Members write about state boards and the exam years that swallow adolescence — the JEE and NEET machine, coaching centres, the weight families put on a single result — about joint families and the ones quietly becoming nuclear, about monsoon as infrastructure rather than weather, and about the gap between the metros and the towns most people actually live in.
English is widely used for schooling and work, so exchanges usually start in English without friction. Where it gets interesting is the other direction: members are glad to teach Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Marathi or Malayalam by letter, and a written script is a good way to learn one, because you can take as long as you like over each character.
On food, be specific or be gently corrected. Curry is not a dish, most Indian food is regional and vegetarian-by-default in some states and not at all in others, and asking what someone ate this week gets you further than asking about Indian food in general.
Good openings: ask which language they think in, what their state is known for inside India, what a wedding in their family is actually like, or what a normal school day looked like for them. Ask what they would cook for you if you visited.
